VPN stands for virtual privacy network. It's a technology that allows you to establish a secure connection over public networks, such as the internet, or within a service provider’s private network. Many institutions, including schools and large corporations, use VPN services to allow their users to securely connect to their private networks. Internetbeskyttelse VPN technology can link multiple sites together, even if they are separated by a long distance. This is similar to wide area networks (WAN). VPN technology is used to connect educational institutions across the globe, even if they are located in different countries.
For authentication purposes, users must provide username and password to access a virtual private network. A PIN (personal identification code) is required for some VPN connections. This can usually be found in the form a token. This PIN is updated every few seconds and matches the account's username or password. Even if the token were stolen, it would still be valid without the above information. Virtual private networks can be used to protect privacy by using security protocols and tunneling protocols. Below is a list of the various VPN protocols as well as their descriptions.
PPTP
PPTP, or Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, is less secure than other protocols because it uses 128-bit keys to encrypt traffic. This will not apply to many users, particularly if they are connecting with a VPN for personal use.
L2TP
Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol, or L2TP is a more secure option. It works with IPSec protocol which uses better-protected encryption algorithms than those used with PPTP. L2TP encryption is more secure because it uses a combination of the 3DES encryption algorithm with a 168-bit keys.
SSTP
Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol, or SSTP, is the most secure protocol. It is a SSL VPN protocol and uses 2048-bit encryption keys as well as authentication certificates.
It is the strongest VPN protocol because it can operate in network environments that block VPN protocols. VPN connections are not allowed in certain countries, such as Belize. However, there are companies that allow VPN connections. These types of situations are best served by VPN with SSTP protocol.
Using the information above, you can choose the best VPN protocol for you. PPTP is best for you if you are only looking to surf the internet at home or on hotspots. You can go to the next service if you require more protection than PPTP.
